The idea of having a day to honor fathers was inspired by the already established Mother's Day celebration. Sonora Smart Dodd, from Spokane, Washington, is often credited with being the driving force behind the creation of Fathering Sunday. She wanted to find a way to honor her own father, William Jackson Smart, who had raised her and her siblings single-handedly after their mother's death.The first Fathering Sunday Celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. It gained popularity over the years and gradually spread to other parts of the United States. In 1972, President Richard Nixon officially recognized Fathering Sunday as a national holiday in the United States
